How can i host a casual board game meetup at the library without being stiff?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game afternoon at the local library meeting room, but I’m worried it might feel too structured and scare off the very people I’m hoping will just drop in. Has anyone else dealt with this tension between planning an event and keeping it genuinely relaxed?

I did something similar last spring in a library room. It was plain: a couple of folding tables, a small shelf of games, no sign up. People wandered in, sat down, and the vibe stayed casual because there was no real agenda.

I tried adding a loose schedule and a few destination games at certain times, but it started to feel staged and people skipped the plan.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem isn't the plan but how people hear about it; I posted a flyer and still had zero signups.

I kept a cart with popular games near the door and a visible clock so everyone knew it wasn't a formal event; still felt a bit stiff.

One afternoon I backed off the structure entirely, just left the room open, and was surprised how many stuck around once they saw others playing.

Is the real issue that folks don't know it's casual, or that they wouldn't drop in unless it felt more like a meetup?
