How can i host a casual board game night that feels welcoming?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for people in my apartment building, but I’m worried it might feel forced or awkward. How do you create a welcoming atmosphere for neighbors who might not know each other without it feeling like a structured networking event?

We did it last month. Kept it casual: pizza, tables in the lounge, no sign-in, no name tags. We started with a short cooperative game for about 15 minutes so people who didn’t know anyone could sit at a table without forcing conversation.

I felt the room go quiet after the first round and ended up wandering to chat with a couple folks, then tried a quick rotation to mix games, but it still felt off and a few people stuck with friends they came with.

Do you think the problem is that people in the building don’t want to mingle, or that a casual board night is the wrong format for this group?

I drifted for a while, thinking about it as a social thing and not a game thing, and as a result I kept the second night looser—let people sit where they wanted, bring a game if they felt like it, and just kept snacks nearby. It didn’t cure everything, but it felt more natural.
