How can i host a low-key board game night that helps neighbors connect?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for my apartment building, but I’m worried it might feel forced or awkward if people don’t really mingle. Has anyone had success with a low-key event like this that actually helped neighbors connect?

We did a small board game night in the building lobby last month: two tables, three lightweight games, snacks in the middle. I asked people to grab a seat and tell me a game they’d like to try, and by the end a couple neighbors swapped picks for next week. It felt casual and folks wandered between tables without any big plan.

I tried something similar but it started kinda clunky. I slapped simple name tags on the snacks table and asked people to write their name and a favorite snack. It helped break the ice, but some neighbors still stuck with their usual circles.

Do you think the real issue is time or something else, like people not seeing the invite as community building?

I once tried rearranging chairs to create little circles by the window and kept checking if the spacing was right. Then I realized it wasn’t the seating so much as giving people a moment to talk between turns. We left a tiny prompt card at each table, and that helped a few folks spark a chat, but it felt more like a band-aid than a solution.
