How can i improve cross-hatching and line quality in dynamic sketches?

I've been trying to improve my line quality for more dynamic sketches, but my cross-hatching always ends up looking muddy instead of adding depth. I'm not sure if I'm pressing too hard with my pencil, using the wrong angle, or if my line spacing is just inconsistent.
