How can i improve street portraits with single-point af and back-button focus?

I’ve been trying to get better at capturing candid street portraits, but I keep missing the moment because I’m too slow to manually focus. My autofocus just hunts on busy backgrounds, so I end with a lot of soft shots. I’m wondering if switching to a single point and using back-button focusing would give me more control over where the camera locks on.

Switching to a single point really helped me lock onto the subject instead of letting the background steal the focus. It felt like I finally had some control, even if the moment still catches me off guard sometimes.

Back button focusing was a game changer after a couple of sessions. I could focus on the person, then recompose without chasing focus with the shutter.

That said, a small focus area can be brutal on a moving subject. If they blink or step, you miss because the focus point is tiny and you are not tracking.

I still think the timing matters more than the mode. I try to pre focus on a spot where people usually walk through and hope the moment aligns.

In busy street scenes it helped a bit, but in low contrast or busy color you still get soft shots. I have learned to shoot more open and accept some softness.

Do you think the real problem is autofocus hunting or is it just how fast you react to a fleeting moment?
