How can i keep a clean spiral knot in macramé plant hanger without tangling?

I’ve been trying to make a simple macramé plant hanger with a clean spiral knot pattern, but my cords keep twisting into a tangled mess instead of that smooth, even twist. I’m using the right four-ply cotton cord and following the steps, but my hands just can’t seem to keep the tension consistent as I work down.

I did a similar project last year. I noticed when I got a little tired my tension would drift and the pattern would go wobbly. I started stopping every couple of inches to check both sides were pulling evenly, then I’d reset the cords and go again. It helped a bit, but it never felt perfect.

One thing I did was clip the hanger to a hook so the top stayed still while I fed the cords; it kept me from twisting the whole thing in my lap. Not foolproof, but the twists slowed.

Are you sure the problem is tension? Sometimes the cords kink or the way you grip them affects how the knots sit. It might be the grip you’re using when you wrap that’s throwing the result off.

I tried a different cord and humidity changed how it behaved; on humid days mine stayed fluffy and would stick to skin, making slips. If you have air conditioning, try working in a cooler, drier area. Also stepping away for a minute can help you reset your hands.
