How can i keep forum threads from dying by changing bump and sort order?

I’ve noticed that some of the most interesting discussions on here seem to just fade away after a few replies, even when there’s clearly more to say. It makes me wonder if the way we’re bumping threads or the default sort order is working against keeping conversations alive.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. A thread starts buzzing and then it goes quiet after a few replies.

I tried posting a second reply a day later hoping to rekindle it, but the momentum didn’t return.

The default sort feels like it nudges newer posts to the top, which can bury the later comments.

Maybe people just move on or their attention drifts elsewhere, and the bump alone isn’t enough.

I did a tiny experiment, inviting a counterpoint in a new reply and linking a related example; it brought in a couple more people for a short stretch.

Do you think pinning or a different order would help, or is the real issue just how we allocate time?
