How can I keep my focus during the exhale in mindful breathing?

I’ve been trying to practice mindful breathing every morning, but I keep getting stuck on the exhale. I focus on the inhale just fine, but then my mind wanders as I breathe out and I lose the thread completely. Has anyone else found their attention drifts on the exhale?

I tried counting breaths on the exhale as a lifeline but I kept losing track and it just made me tense.
