How can i keep my old polyester clothes from shedding microplastics?
#1
I’ve been trying to switch to a more sustainable wardrobe, but I keep hitting a wall with my old polyester workout clothes. They’re still functional, but I know they shed microplastics every time I wash them. I feel stuck between wasting usable items and contributing to that kind of pollution. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I did something similar last year. I kept a few of the old polyester workouts as backups for really cold runs, but every wash left me cringing at the shedding. After a month I cut them up into rags for the shop and garage and replaced most of my rotation with secondhand thrift shop finds in wool and recycled blends that feel sturdier and less museum-worthy. It still stings to waste things, but it helped me stop buying more fast wear.

I started using a microfiber wash bag and a lint catcher, plus a home washing filter when I could. It helped reduce the shed a bit, but I still feel uneasy about washing older gear and releasing microplastics.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the fibers so much as how often I replace things. Am I chasing a green myth?

I grabbed a tote and cut the pants and tees into cleaning cloths for the shed, and kept a couple for winter runs until they finally wore out. It felt like a stopgap, not a solution.
