How can i make fabric folds look natural in digital painting?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at drawing dynamic fabric in my character illustrations, but I keep getting stuck on how to make the folds look natural without over-rendering. My latest attempt at a cloak just ended up looking stiff and plasticy, even after studying some fabric references. Has anyone else hit this wall when working on digital paintings?

I’ve been there too. I stopped trying to render every crease at once and focused on a couple key folds that sell the motion. Then I blocked in the values first and let the rest be implied by the silhouette. It looked more alive and less plasticy, even on rough drafts.

What helped for me was letting gesture drive the fabric. I did quick timed sketches of the figure in motion, then wrapped the cloak around that pose and only added the strongest folds after the pose felt right. The fabric read as dynamic more often, though it still felt off if the weight didn’t match the movement.

Maybe the problem isn’t the folds at all but lighting or cloth weight. Have you tried adjusting the light direction or the fabric weight and then re-reading the same folds to see if they read differently?

Sometimes I drifted into texture nerd territory and wasted hours on brushes, then realized the core issue was the pose and the main folds. I kept it rough, added crisp edges to separate the cloak, and still kept the rest soft. It helped a bit, but I’m not sure I trust it.
