How can i make i forest setting feel threatening in a night scene?

I’ve been trying to write a scene where my protagonist is lost in a dense forest at night, but every draft feels flat. I know I need to build a palpable sense of dread through the environment itself, but I’m struggling to move beyond just describing the dark and the trees. How do you make a setting feel actively threatening?

I had a scene like that where the dark felt empty until I let a single sound anchor it. A twig crack, not loud, but constant, like a heartbeat you can never trust. I leaned into sensory detail: damp earth smell, resin, a chill that makes the skin crawl. The threat wasn’t a monster; it was the forest closing in, the path fading, the sense that every rustle could be closer than you think. I slowed the rhythm on purpose, so the reader feels the weight of each step.

I tried adding a wrong-footing moment: a glimmer of light that dies, a decision the character second-guesses. The env did a lot of the work—wind in the pines, branches snagging on clothes, ground that shifts underfoot, a scent that seems to pass by—and the moment you think you’ve seen something, it slips away. The scene lands when they realize they’re not just lost but being watched, even if they never catch a sight.

Maybe the real threat isn’t the trees but the map in their head—the plan they keep tearing up. In one draft I had the protagonist rehearse a route and then yank it away with a soft noise, and it suddenly felt more honest, less a villainous forest. Is that really the problem, or is there something else the scene should be doing?

I wandered a bit last time, treating the forest as a character and then drifted to memory and weather, then circled back. The threat morphed into cold air and a distant snap, into the sense that the ground itself might betray every step. Not tidy, but it kept the mood in motion rather than a list of scary things.
