How can I manage keratosis pilaris on my arms?
#1
I’ve been dealing with these small, rough patches of skin on the back of my arms for years, and my doctor just called it keratosis pilaris. I’ve tried various lotions, but nothing really makes it go away completely. I’m just wondering if this is something others have learned to manage, or if it’s something I should expect to just live with.

I’ve had the same patches on the back of my arms for years, and yes it’s that KP thing they call keratosis pilaris. It hasn’t gone away, but I’ve learned what helps me live with it. I use a thick moisturizer with lactic acid or urea every night and do a gentle scrub with a soft washcloth once a week. I avoid hot showers and scented products, and I keep a humidifier running in winter. Some days are rough, some days not so bad.

My dermatologist once prescribed a mild retinoid cream for a while. It did help a little with the rough texture, but it dried my skin out, so I stopped and stuck with a heavy moisturizer and a few OTC products that contain lactic acid. Not a cure, but the rough patches became less noticeable for a while when I stuck to a routine.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem is the patch itself or something else like the skin barrier and climate. Some days I barely notice it, other days it feels glaring. Do you think maybe the real issue isn’t the patches but how the skin holds moisture or how dry the air is around you?

I’ve mostly stopped fighting it and just keep skin moisturized and comfortable. If a product stings or flakes me, I drop it and move on. Not perfect, but it’s the rhythm I’ve stuck with.
