How can I manage persistent irritation from retinoid acne treatment?
#1
I’ve been using a prescription retinoid for about three months now to treat my moderate acne, and my skin is still peeling and feels tight every single day. I was expecting some initial dryness, but this persistent flaking and sensitivity is making it hard to even wear sunscreen without it looking patchy. I’m just not sure if this level of irritation is still part of the normal adjustment period or if it means the treatment is too strong for me.

I have been there. I started a prescription retinoid because of acne and after three months my skin is still peeling every day and it feels tight. Sunscreen sits on top like a mask and still looks patchy. I figured it would settle in the first month not three months later. Some days I wonder if this is just the adjustment period but other days it wipes out my confidence enough to skip sunscreen altogether.

I did try dialing it back a notch by layering in a thick fragrance free moisturizer after washing and I stopped using other active products on the same nights. The peeling eased a bit and my skin felt less raw but the dryness never fully went away. Sunscreen still looked uneven if I was not careful with the layer but at least it was not painful every morning.

Is it possible this is not the real issue and there is another trigger like the cleanser or the sunscreen itself? I keep wondering if the retinoid is still the core problem after all this time.

I keep catching myself rambling about deadlines and coffee and then I remember a friend who swapped to a milder retinoid and a ceramide rich cream. They said it helped a little though not overnight and it did make the sunscreen feel less hostile on the skin. Not a miracle but something different.
