How can I manage statin muscle aches without stopping the medication?
#1
I’ve been on a statin for a few months now and my latest bloodwork shows my LDL is down, but I’ve been getting these persistent muscle aches in my legs and back. My doctor mentioned it could be a possible side effect of the medication, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and found a way to manage it without stopping the drug.

I’ve been there. After I started a statin my legs ached a lot, especially at night after workouts. I didn’t want to stop the med, so I stuck with it and tried a few things: gentler daily movement, extra stretching, and some supplements like magnesium and CoQ10 to rule deficits. The pain hung around for a while but wasn’t crippling. We kept the dose the same for several weeks to see if it would settle, and it did a bit but never fully disappeared.

I started keeping a log of when the pains showed up and what I did that day. Some days I felt fine, others it flared after a long drive or heavy lifting. It made me question whether I was pushing too hard or if the timing with meals mattered.

One thing I kept thinking about is whether the pain is truly from the drug or something else, like old injuries or a new gym routine. Do you also notice fatigue or weakness other days?

A coworker mentioned that a different medicine in the same class helped them, and the aches faded after a few weeks. Again, that’s not a move to take lightly, just something discussed with a clinician. On days when the pain is mild, I focus on light stretching and a warm bath, and I pace workouts more.
