How can i measure real incremental lift from my retargeting ads?

I’ve been running a small retargeting campaign for my online store, but I can’t tell if it’s actually driving conversions or just showing ads to people who would have bought anyway. The pixel fires and the metrics look okay, but I’m struggling to isolate the true incremental lift from these efforts.

Yep, I’ve chased that too. The pixel fires just fine and dashboards look healthy, but I can’t prove those sales wouldn’t have happened without the ads.

We did a tiny holdout like pausing retargeting for a random 20% of visitors for a weekend. When we compared weeks, the lift was small and the signal felt noisy.

Could the real issue be the attribution window or overlap with other channels rather than the retargeting itself?

I tried comparing a group that never saw the ads to the rest, but people buy days later and the timing never lined up, so it never cleanly separated the effect.

Sometimes the problem feels like the audience is ready to buy anyway; the ads just remind them.

We swapped the creative once and saw no clear change in behavior, and then wandered into a dozen other things before giving up for a week.
