How can I meet neighbors for a coffee or walk without it feeling awkward?

I’ve been trying to meet more people in my neighborhood, but I’m finding it really hard to connect beyond just a quick hello at the mailbox. I keep wondering if there’s a better way to find folks nearby who might want to grab a coffee or go for a walk, without it feeling forced or awkward.

I tried putting a note on the mailbox wall saying I wanted to grab coffee with someone from the neighborhood. A couple folks replied, we met at a cafe, and after about 15 minutes the conversation opened up.

I joined a Saturday park walk near the library. It felt nice being outside with neighbors, but I kept clamming up at first and ended up mostly listening.

Maybe the real issue isn’t numbers, but what kind of connection you’re hoping for. Is the goal too specific for casual encounters?

I kept showing up at the same coffee shop for a few weeks. People smiled, we talked a bit, and then I bailed before I asked to swap numbers.
