How can i mount chartplotter on a curved fiberglass console with backing plate?
#1
I'm trying to figure out the best way to secure my new chartplotter on the console of my center console. The mounting surface is slightly curved and I'm worried the standard bracket won't get a solid grip, especially when we're pounding through chop. I've heard about using a backing plate for a more permanent installation, but I'm hesitant to start drilling into the fiberglass.

i did the curved surface thing last summer on a center console and the standard bracket just flexed in chop so i added a backing plate across the fiberglass and used longer fasteners with sealant it felt solid after a few rough days and i was surprised how much it quieted the flex

another guy on my crew tried a strap style mount for the chartplotter when the hull curves took away the straight surface he swore the strap saved him during one gale but it lacks the clean look and we still worry in heavy seas

i wonder if we are chasing the wrong problem the plotter stays snug in calm seas but when the chop comes the cockpit moves a lot and maybe a bigger panel or a different mounting point would help more than a plate

one mate drilled into fiberglass to hold a backing plate and it never felt rock solid he later found a crack he got cold feet and moved to a portable mount on the rail for trips the data line stayed but the device moved around less when he stopped chasing perfection
