How can I push synth pads back in the mix without losing presence?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I used a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the background. Is there something specific I should be doing with mid-range frequencies or the reverb’s pre-delay to create more depth?

I’ve been there. I found a subtle high cut on the pad and a long plate reverb helped it sit back without turning it down. I also dipped the mud frequencies, like around 1 to 2 kHz, just a touch so it leaves the space for the bass.

Parallel compression on the pad bus with a little saturation gave it more depth without pounding through the mix. The pad still whispers when the drums hit.

Do you think the problem is the pad itself or the rest of the mix masking it? I keep wondering if muddy bass or the kick is pulling the focus away, not the reverb.

I tried tweaking the reverb pre Delay so the pad’s tail doesn’t collide with the drums. A plate with a touch more diffusion and a tiny pre Delay helped the space feel bigger without sharpening the pad.
