How can I reduce screen time when apps keep demanding my attention?

I’ve been trying to cut down my screen time, but every app and website now feels like it’s designed to make that impossible. The constant notifications and endless scroll make me wonder if we’ve lost the ability to design technology that respects our attention instead of demanding it.

Yeah, I know that feeling. The instant you unlock the screen it’s like a stream of nudges pulling you in. I tried turning off most non essential notifications for a week and still found myself drifting whenever I opened anything.

I cleaned my phone up too: clean home screen, grayscale for a month, and I kept track of how often I tapped apps. It dropped from about 60 taps a day to around 25. Not perfect, but you could feel the difference.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the apps. Is it the pace of the day or the fear of missing out that makes us scroll?

Some days I just give up and doomscroll anyway, then I beat myself up for it. Other days I try a tiny change and it feels like a victory that slips away by afternoon.
