How can I remove my old usernames and photos from the web?
#1
I’ve been trying to scrub my old usernames from the web and it feels impossible. I found a profile picture I used over a decade ago still linked to an old forum, and it’s making me wonder how much of that past identity is still just sitting out there for anyone to piece together.

Ive been there. I chased an old avatar linked to a dormant forum for months deleting accounts left and right only to find the same image rehosted somewhere I never touched. It felt like whack a mole. I started a simple log which sites would take a deletion which ignored me and how long it took. The numbers were ugly but at least I could track progress.

I used to think a single delete would fix everything but the web is full of copies. Sometimes I worry the problem is bigger than the tech that scraped data years ago still holds it somewhere. I try to accept that some traces will persist and focus on curbing new ones like turning off auto fill and choosing different usernames for new services.

One tactic that helped a little was setting up searches for my old usernames and the hash of that old pic then circling back to request removal when something new popped up. Not perfect but it gave me a hint of what still shows up.

Is this really the real problem or is it just fear of being found I ask myself that a lot when I spot something old and embarrassing still out there I keep coming back to the idea that you cant erase every copy but you can manage what shows up in the first page of a search.
