How can i run a fair community giveaway drawing without it feeling rigged?

I’m trying to plan a small community giveaway for our neighborhood group, but I’m stuck on how to actually pick a winner fairly. I don’t want anyone to think it’s rigged if I just draw a name myself, but using a random name picker online feels a bit impersonal.

Last time we did a tiny giveaway in the neighborhood I used a big jar and folded slips with names. A neighbor watched, I pulled one slip, and we posted the moment on the group chat so people could see it happened live. It felt real because people watched the entire draw.

I hate the vibes of a random name picker app, so we tried a simple setup: printed the names, tied each to a number, and had someone without a stake supervise the pull while recording. It was warmer than a pure app, even if the setup looked a little clunky.

Do you think the real problem is the fear of bias, or is the bigger issue that the room still wants a sense of community even if the method is fair?

One time we did a two step thing: folks dropped their names in a box, we assigned numbers, then the caller did a single stage draw. It dragged on, and afterward people wondered why we didn’t just pick someone who helped organize the event, so we dropped the second draw.
