How can I settle into morning meditation when my thoughts race?

I’ve been trying to sit for twenty minutes each morning, but my mind just races through my to-do list the entire time. How do you actually settle into the stillness when your thoughts are so loud and persistent?

I tried sitting for twenty minutes and my brain kept sprinting through the to do list. I started by letting one obvious thought live for a minute, then I wrote it down and went back to the breath. After a few weeks it softened a little, but it stayed loud most mornings.

I did a shorter window first and used a tiny anchor. When thoughts jumped in I whispered a single word like 'later' and tried to return to the breath. It didn’t stop the thoughts, but I stopped reaching for my phone as quickly.

Is the problem really the stillness, or the idea that mornings must feel quiet to count as meditating? Maybe the real issue is the goal; maybe you’re chasing quiet instead of noticing what’s there.

Some days I just wing it and accept the noise. I count the seconds of calm between thoughts, which is tiny, and I want more but I take what I get and move on with my day.
