How can I stay with shoulder tension during a body scan without thoughts racing?
#1
I’ve been trying to do a short body scan meditation each morning, but I keep getting stuck at my shoulders. I notice the tension there, but instead of releasing it, my mind just starts racing about my to-do list for the day. Has anyone else found a way to stay with the physical sensation without your thoughts completely taking over?

I get the shoulder snag too. I name the spot—'tension here'—and breathe into it, imagining the breath softening the tight line that runs from neck to shoulder. When the mind wanders to the day stuff, I acknowledge the thought and gently return attention to the felt sense without scolding myself.

Some mornings it feels like I’m not doing a body scan at all, just staring at a blank ceiling while my brain catalogs everything I forgot to do. I’ve tried a 2 minute timer and a strict return to the breath, but the chatter doesn’t quit. Am I missing something obvious?

Yesterday I even tried to add a little shoulder roll before settling back in, just enough to loosen the edge of stiffness. It didn’t fix the thinking, but the next breath did feel more present, for a beat or two.

I hear you. I’m not sure if it’s the body or the story zipping past it that’s the real obstacle, but I keep coming back anyway, even if it’s messy and a little frantic.
