How can I stop defaulting to cynicism in online comments?
#1
I’ve been noticing that I automatically assume the worst about people in comment sections, even before they’ve said anything particularly inflammatory. It’s like my brain has been trained by all the negativity to expect a fight. Has anyone else felt this kind of defensive cynicism just become their default mode online?

Yeah I get this. I notice I brace for a fight in comment sections before anyone has said anything inflammatory. It feels like the habit is running on autopilot.

I tried muting comment sections for a week and counting how many times I clicked back in, and it cut the edge a bit but I missed some thoughtful takes.

I told myself to slow down and ask what I’m actually reacting to, but I keep slipping back into that reflex.

Is the real problem the space itself with the rush to roast and the likes, or am I just over reading every thread?
