How can I support a friend whose family is in a siege city with blocked aid?

I’m trying to understand how to actually help when a friend’s family is stuck in a city under siege, beyond just sending money. The communication is so fragmented and aid convoys keep getting turned back, so I feel useless just watching updates. How do you support someone when the practical avenues for direct assistance are completely blocked?

That sense of helplessness is real. I’ve watched updates and felt the same. What helped me a bit was turning the channel from what I can’t do to what I can do locally: I called a couple of NGOs to understand what they actually move and when, and I passed along only verified needs to the friend. I started by asking what would feel practical right now— medicines for a specific person, a way to charge a phone, a contact with a doctor. It’s slow and uncertain, but naming small requests and trying to coordinate a concrete response kept me from feeling pointless.

I think sometimes the best we can do besides money is steady contact. I set up a daily voice message to check in, and I kept a running list of what the family says they need most right now. When I found a reliable shelter contact, I shared it and verified it through a couple of sources before sending it on. It wasn’t flashy, but it helped them know someone is listening.

Do you think the problem is really access or is it the lack of reliable, safe channels to learn what is actually needed on the ground right now?

Another thing I tried was stepping back and noticing my own irritation and fatigue. I bought a cheap power bank and a few snacks for the friend to hand out if they can move a short distance toward a checkpoint. It felt silly later, but it reminded me I can do something tangible even if it’s tiny. Then I drifted to thinking about how fast updates change the mood and whether we’re chasing a moving target.
