How can I talk to my neighbors about water use without starting a feud?
#1
I’m trying to figure out how to talk to my neighbors about their perfectly manicured lawn. They use a lot of water and chemical treatments, and I’m worried it’s harming the local creek, but I don’t want to come across as judgmental or start a feud. Has anyone navigated this kind of conversation successfully?

I tried something like this last year. I led with a real compliment about their lawn, then said I was trying to keep our creek healthy and asked if they’d have a minute to chat. I mentioned a few easy tweaks like watering at dawn and cutting back chemical stuff. It wasn’t a lecture, and they gave me a nod. We didn’t become close, but we left on decent terms.

Another friend tried a different tack and got a shove back. They felt judged and shut down the conversation fast. It wasn’t malicious, just a feeling of ‘this is not for you to comment on.’

I did a low risk move too: left a small note with two simple ideas—swap in some native plants to cut fertilizer needs, and set up a rain barrel for irrigation. I tucked in a link to a local guide and kept my contact info. No reply yet, but maybe it helped someone see options.

Do you think the real problem is water use or fertilizer runoff, or something else?
