How can I tell if my prayer aligns with a higher will or just wishful thinking?

I’ve always believed in the power of prayer, but lately I’ve been struggling with whether my petitions are just a form of spiritual wishful thinking. How do you know when you’re genuinely submitting to a higher will versus just quietly hoping for your own preferred outcome?

I started keeping a tiny prayer journal for about a month. I wrote what I asked for and how I felt afterward. The pattern that showed up was telling: when I asked for guidance or a change in me, I felt a gentler nudge afterward, even if the outcome wasn’t what I hoped. When I begged for a specific result, I got tense and pushy in my thoughts.

I still get carried away by hope, but I try to wait in the quiet after I pray and notice what comes up inside me. Sometimes it’s fear, sometimes it’s relief, sometimes a simple acceptance. It’s not science, just noticing how I feel.

I prayed hard for a job once and got it, but the role didn’t fit the way I expected. The experience taught me that I can’t force the world to bend to my plan, even when I feel sure I’m asking for the right thing. Not a clean answer, just a dent in certainty.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the will outside us but how loud our own wants are. I drifted off thinking about timing and stress, then realized I was praying through the noise more than listening for anything beyond my own schedule. Am I praying for a sign or for a change in me?
