How can i tell if prayer is real guidance or just my thoughts?
#1
I’ve always believed in the power of prayer, but lately I’ve been wondering if I’m just talking to myself. When I ask for guidance or help with a difficult decision, the silence that follows feels so complete. How do you know if you’re actually receiving a spiritual answer, or if you’re just interpreting your own thoughts and hopes?

Some days the quiet feels like a room I can finally breathe in. I used to expect a loud sign, but mostly I notice little nudges: a word that repeats, a sense of peace when I pause, a small coincidence that makes sense later. I started keeping a tiny notebook and wrote down what I asked for and what I noticed afterward. Not every entry lands, but over weeks some patterns show up and that helps me tell the difference between wishful thinking and something else.

I tried a few practical tests. I prayed, then deliberately waited before acting. If the plan changed on its own or I felt a different pull, I logged it. After a couple of months I saw that decisions I rushed ended up with regret, while the slower choice sometimes seemed to unfold with less stress. Not a science, just my messy memory of what felt lighter after giving it space.

Do you think maybe the real problem isn’t the silence but the expectation you’re placing on the voice you want to hear?

Sometimes I drifted to something else when I hit the wall—mowing the lawn, listening to rain, a long walk—and later the path came back to the same question, but a little softer. The drift feels like a reset, not a refusal of the question. I still don’t know how to tell a real answer from my own mood, I just keep showing up and waiting.
