How can i tell if pre-order traction really validates a market need?

I’ve been running a pre-order for my new productivity tool for three weeks, but I’m worried the early interest is just from friends and a small network effect. How can I tell if the initial traction is actually validating a market need, or if it’s just a temporary spike that will fade?

I ran a pre-order cycle last quarter. A few dozen signups, but only a handful kept using the beta after day 2. I checked activation and 7 day retention numbers and they barely moved after week 1. I also asked the most engaged folks what would push them to pay, and their answers varied a lot.

I keep thinking maybe the spike is just a network effect from my close circle. Then I push a little content elsewhere and it hardly added any new signups. It makes me question whether the market truly feels the pain.

We did a quick interview with 5 non buyers; they said the problem isn't clear or the tool is too early; not a strong signal. Still not sure if it's the product or the market.

Do you think the real issue is the need itself or just visibility and messaging? If you have a single question to ask, I'd start there.
