How can I use midrange and reverb pre-delay to push synth pads back in the mix?

I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I used a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the background. Is there something specific I should be doing with mid-range frequencies or the reverb’s pre-delay to create more depth?

Yeah I tried carving some space in the mids on the pad, around 400 Hz, and then let a longer, darker tail sit under the rest. It still sounds present, but it sits a bit lower in the mix and stops fighting the kick.

On my last pass I fiddled with the pre delay on the reverb so the tail comes after the dry pad. It creates a separate space behind the main notes, which made the pad feel more behind the mix without turning it down.

Are you sure the problem isn’t the overall balance or the kick taking too much space? It can fool you into thinking the pads are loud when the rest of the track is crowded.

I tried a light side chain from the kick to the pad, just enough to let the kick breathe. Kept the high cut steady and kept the pad's width modest so it doesn’t clang in the foreground.
