How can i use pre-delay on reverb to keep synth pads from washing out?

I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down, but every time I reach for reverb it just makes them sound washy and indistinct. I’m wondering if using a pre-delay on the reverb send is the right move to keep their definition while still pushing them back spatially.

Yeah, I’ve chased that too. A dry initial hit with a spacey tail can help it retreat in the mix without losing the pad’s character. I tried sending the pad to its own bus with a touch of pre-delay and kept the tail dark; it kept the attack intact and still pushed the pad back.

I tried a longer pre-delay on the reverb and it did push the pad back, but as soon as the tail came in it smeared the chords.

Could be masking. If the bass and kick are eating the same lows, even spacey effects won’t save it.

One time I got obsessed with chasing space during a rehearsal and drifted into worrying about the room instead of the sound. I’m not sure if the issue is the pad itself or how it sits in the mix, but a patch change and listening at different volumes helped me notice what was going on.
