How can I verify a supplier's credibility with few independent reviews?
#1
I’ve been trying to figure out if a potential supplier is actually reliable, and I keep hitting a wall with their online presence. They have a clean website and good product specs, but I can’t find any substantial third-party reviews or client testimonials that feel genuine, which makes me hesitant to move forward with a contract. How do you all vet a company’s credibility when there’s very little independent verification available?

I start with the basics: confirm their legal entity details, physical address, and tax ID. Then I pull a quick credit check and scan for any regulatory flags. If that looks clean, I push for a short pilot, a few client references, and clear acceptance criteria in the contract plus tighter payment terms. The absence of third party reviews isn’t a dealbreaker by itself, but it’s a risk signal that deserves attention.

We asked for a couple of real references and tried to contact their top three customers, but the replies were generic and came from generic accounts. We kept it lean and ran a one month trial with strict defect rates and a rollback plan.

I also tried to visit their facility or do a virtual tour, but travel budget is tight, so we settled for process docs, quality manuals, and a sample product with a quick test. The moment we saw a mismatch between the spec and the sample, we paused.

Do you think the lack of independent verification means the real risk is supplier transition, or is it the product risk itself?
