How can our household realistically cut energy use in half?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my household can realistically cut its energy use in half this year. We’ve already done the obvious stuff like LED bulbs and being careful with the thermostat, but hitting that 50% reduction feels daunting without a major lifestyle change I’m not sure we can sustain.

We gave a big push last winter and the bill did drop, but not by 50 percent. It felt doable for a few weeks, then the routine wore it down.

We added smart power strips and unplugged stuff we weren't using. The savings were real but only in the low single digits.

I keep thinking the fridge and freezer are the real culprits, they run all the time. Replacing them helped a bit last year, but not dramatically.

We did a home energy audit and it gave concrete ideas like sealing leaks and a bit of insulation. We did some, but the big fixes were expensive, so we paused.

I started keeping a log of when we used heat and hot water over a week, then got bored and stopped. For me, the habits are the sticking point, not the math.

Weekend patterns wreck the savings; weekdays we do fine, weekends we trip over short showers and extra cooking. It adds up.

Is the real blocker maybe how we’re counting usage rather than the actual consumption?
