How can we afford a second child on our budget?
#1
My wife and I are trying to figure out if we can afford to have a second kid with our current budget. We've run the numbers a dozen times, but the grocery bill alone has us second-guessing everything, not to mention the future cost of childcare. It feels like our financial planning is just a series of guesses now.

We went through the same thing last year. The grocery bill did creep up after our first kid, but the bigger shock was the childcare numbers. It made us question everything we were spending.

For three months we tracked groceries week by week. It bounced around with holidays and weekends, but overall it was up about 12 percent compared to our pre kid baseline. We noticed snacks and convenience foods added up fast, and a few unexpected runs to the store showed up in the same month as a new baby gear purchase.

We tried tightening other places first, like switching to store brands, doing a simple meal plan, and cooking a couple of big batches to freeze. Some months saved a bit, other times life happened and it didn’t help much. Still, the math felt sticky.

I can't pretend I have a magic answer, it often felt like guessing, but maybe it helps to run a rough two kid forecast with a few scenarios instead of one number. Is the real barrier the groceries or the childcare?
