How can we reduce plastic packaging at the grocery store?
#1
I’ve been trying to reduce my household’s plastic waste, but I’m hitting a wall with food packaging. Even when I buy loose produce, it seems like everything else—from pasta bags to yogurt tubs—comes wrapped in it. I’m starting to wonder if avoiding single-use plastics at the grocery store is even possible for an average family without spending a fortune.

I started buying loose produce and bulk staples, bringing jars and cloth bags, and kept a monthlong tally. It did cut some packaging, but dairy, yogurt tubs, and bottled sauces still showed up in plastic. doable but not perfect.

Same here; bulk oats were cheaper, but pasta and sauces still showed up in plastic even when there were loose options. I bought on sale packaged items to save money, and the waste didn’t drop as much as I hoped.

Maybe the problem isn’t just the store; it’s the recycling flow and what actually gets recycled. Home composting helps a bit with scraps, but the plastic stays. Do you think your own setup could matter more than chasing every packaging option?

I did try a local bulk store once, but the price difference was bigger than I expected and I still left with plastic sleeves on some items. I did notice bulk buys in larger containers can be cheaper per unit, so I kept that in mind and skipped some pre-made items.
