How can we run a fair and transparent community gardening giveaway?
#1
I’m trying to plan a small community giveaway for our local gardening group, but I’m stuck on the best way to pick a winner fairly. I’ve seen people use random name pickers, but I’m worried that might feel impersonal or even seem rigged if I don’t do it transparently.

We did a jar draw at the community garden day last year. People wrote names on slips, dropped them in a mason jar, and we announced the winner live. It felt personal and you could see the process, which helped with trust.

I worry the problem isn’t the method but whether folks feel included. A couple of neighbors said the winner happened to be someone who showed up early, and that sting stuck with me longer than the draw itself.

We tried a digital draw once, with a laptop screen showing the list and the highlight reel. It felt empty compared to watching the slips turn in the jar, so we went back to the paper approach and added a quick live video to show the steps.

If you do want a fair vibe, would having an outside volunteer oversee help, or does that just feel performative in a small group? I’m still not sure what actually fixes the perception.
