How can we simplify Sunday lunch without losing the family vibe?

I’ve always loved the tradition of our family’s big Sunday lunch, but lately I’m finding the sheer amount of food and time it takes feels overwhelming. I’m wondering if simplifying the meal while keeping everyone together would lose that special feeling of a shared feast.

I love the Sunday table too but last month I cut the menu to two mains and a big salad. The room felt warmer and people stayed longer to chat.

We started cooking everything in one roasting tray and a couple of simple sides, and the cleanup dropped a lot of noise from the kitchen.

Timing was the real pain for us, so I prepped ahead and told guests to bring a drink and sit down with us. It helped, but it still felt like a performance.

I tried a fancy dessert to wow everyone and ended up with leftovers that nobody touched, which felt like a false finish, and later I found myself tidying the kitchen while the rain tapped the window and thinking about the garden.

I worry that dialing things back might steal some of the ritual, the shared hands and the smell of garlic in the air.

Is it possible the real problem is not the food but how we pace the day and where people sit, not the recipe?
