How did you finally get the flare right in a Cessna 172?

I’ve been flying the Cessna 172 for about a year now, and I’m still not totally comfortable with the flare. I either float way too long or plant it harder than I’d like. What finally made it click for you?

I finally felt it when I stopped chasing a perfect flare and started listening to the airplane. I kept the wings level, controlled the roundout with subtle back pressure, and waited for the nose to settle. When the mains touched, I barely released the last bit of power and the whole thing felt small and quiet.

Took me a week of practice with an empty field and a friend on the ground counting soft touchdown vibes. I filmed a few and noticed I had too much back pressure too early, so I backed off and let the airplane settle.

What if the real problem isn’t the last seconds but how I’m losing altitude earlier in the approach? I kept thinking about the end of the roundout, but the nose stayed high and the airspeed trended wrong.

Sometimes I had a moment where I landed and thought I did it, then realized the wind shifts or surface texture mattered more than I expected. It wasn’t a neat fix, just a messy, ongoing learning curve.
