How do i balance my elderly father's autonomy with his safety?

I’ve been trying to understand where the line is between respecting my elderly father’s autonomy and stepping in because I’m worried about his safety. He insists on living alone and managing his own finances, but I’ve noticed some missed bills and he seems more vulnerable to phone scams. It feels like a conflict between his right to self-determination and my concern for his well-being.

I’ve been in a similar space with my dad. He wanted to do things his own way, even when the mailbox started looking crowded with bills. I tried shadowing the process for a while—watching him open the letters, write checks, and then forget a payment week later. The moment you see a missed bill, it feels like more than money; it hits the idea of safety and control at the same time. I didn’t take over the finances, but I did set up a simple weekly check and asked him to confirm each payment aloud. It slowed things down, and he pushed back sometimes, but the pattern at least became visible to us both.

It’s exhausting to tell the line between respect and risk. Sometimes I think the fear is louder than the facts. Maybe he’s quieter now, maybe not. The scams are real, the calls are slick, and he seems to be retreating from talking about it. I tried to make space for his choices and still bring in a helper once a month to review the bills, nothing heavy, just a second set of eyes. It helped a little but didn’t fix the feeling of being watched.

I started to drift into other things too, like budgeting for groceries and gas, and realized routines matter more than we admit. The moment I pressed a debit card twice by mistake or saw a small overdraft I remembered how fragile these little rhythms are. Then I circled back to him and tried a shared screen session for one bill, which went okay until he asked me to leave the room. It’s messy and not elegant, but we kept at it in small steps.

Do you think the real problem is fear of losing independence rather than the bills?
