How do I balance taking profits vs letting a tech stock run?
#1
I’m trying to decide whether to sell a portion of my position in a tech stock that’s had a big run-up to lock in some gains, but I’m worried about missing out if it continues to climb. How do you all approach this balance between taking profits and letting your winners run?

I go with a base sell plus letting the rest ride. I trim a chunk when it first hits a solid gain and then use a trailing rule so the remainder can run if there is more upside.

I tried that and still felt the pull to keep it all. Then it ran further and I hesitated to trim and regretted it when the drop came.

Do you actually need the liquidity right now?

I also track a simple metric like how many days in a row it is up and compare to a target. If it does not make a fresh high in a week I trim again.
