How do I check other accounts for the same breached password?
#1
I just got a notification that my password was found in a data breach from a site I don't even remember signing up for. I'm trying to figure out how to systematically check which of my other accounts might be using that same compromised password, but I feel like I'm just guessing.

That happened to me once. I got a breach notice for a site I don’t remember using. I checked my login vault and saw I’d reused the same string on a few sites, so I started swapping in unique ones and turning on 2FA where possible. I also started watching my accounts for odd activity and set up breach alerts.

I tried to map it out by scanning the login manager for entries that share that string, but my memory is fuzzy and I found more gaps than matches. I changed the obvious ones and left a few as they were because I couldn’t verify where I used them.

I wonder if the alert is legit or if someone guessed your credentials and flagged a site you didn’t sign up for. I would double check the breach details and not click anything in the email unless you’re on the real site. Then, once verified, go through services you used that credential on.

Sometimes I think the real issue is habit more than the breach. I went down a rabbit hole about cookies and sessions and it did not help my worry. Still, I did a quick sweep of recent logins and then came back to tightening my guardrails. Would you consider using a password manager to centralize changes?
