How do i create a logo that feels modern and timeless and memorable?

I’ve been trying to create a logo that feels both modern and timeless, but every time I think I’ve got it, the final version just looks generic. My latest attempt uses a clean geometric sans-serif and a simple abstract mark, but it lacks any real character or memorability. I’m worried my process is too reliant on current trends in visual identity.

I tried starting from a rough sketch instead of diving straight into vectors. I drew two strokes by hand, then cleaned them up digitally. It felt more alive, but at tiny sizes it got busy and unreadable. The lesson was to test early at different scales and to leave room for a deliberate imperfection in the mark rather than chasing flawless geometry.

Maybe the problem isn’t the logo at all. We’ve got a brand story that’s muddy, and the clean mark just mirrors that vagueness. I asked a few teammates what two words they’d associate with the brand; responses were all over the map. If you had to pick two words you want people to feel, what would they be?

I kept thinking about color and rhythm more than shape. A two color palette and a simple negative space cue actually gave the mark some memory, but I kept slipping back into a sterile feel. It’s tempting to chase trends, but I ended up pausing to watch how the mark behaves on a real page and in an app icon.

I once shipped a version after a late night that looked fresh on the screen but vanished in print and on a shelf. The feedback loop was too slow, so we dropped it and tried a higher constraint—less room for anything fancy and more focus on legibility. It didn’t feel transformative, but at least it wasn’t a mistake that lingered.
