How do I deal with the rolling HP counter in EarthBound without stressing?
#1
I just got a copy of EarthBound for my SNES, but I’m honestly a bit stuck on the whole rolling HP counter. I get that it gives you a chance to heal during a fight, but in a tough battle it just makes me panic and sometimes I waste a turn trying to heal when the numbers are still ticking down. Did anyone else find this mechanic more stressful than helpful at first?

I felt that panic too at first. The rolling HP counter makes you second-guess every move, so you end up stalling to check if you should heal.

In a tough fight I tried to push through and ignore it, but I paid for it. Eventually I started paying attention to the HP roll and deciding, this turn I heal, next turn I go on the attack.

EarthBound’s rolling HP counter was a double-edged thing for me. It gave a tiny window to recover, but in the heat of a boss fight it could feel like a timer counting down to a mistake.

It did slow me down at first, and I hated that feeling. Over time I learned to use the heal sparingly and only when the numbers were clear I wouldn’t get blown up next hit, which helped a little.

Do you think the problem is the timing of the heals or the damage pace? I keep flipping between trust and doubt when the counter moves.
