How do i deduct the cost of my home office desk and chair?

I’m trying to figure out if I can deduct the cost of my home office desk and chair this year. My work requires me to work from home two days a week, and I bought these specifically for that purpose, but I’m not sure if this counts as a legitimate business expense or if it’s considered a personal item since the room is also used for other things.

From what I’ve seen, the space often has to be used only for business to qualify for a deduction. If the room doubles as a living area, the desk and chair aren’t easy to claim as a business expense.

I bought a desk and chair for a similar setup and kept the receipts, but I didn’t claim them this year because the room isn’t exclusive. It felt safer to just leave it out.

It does feel like the exclusive use rule is the real snag. Could the room be treated as a dedicated workspace, or is that still a stretch?

If you’re self employed you might be able to deduct or depreciate the desk and chair, but you’d still need to show the space is used for business; since your room doubles as something else, it’s not guaranteed. It’s worth asking a tax pro or checking the official guidance for your country.
