How do I fit in at a new forum when everyone has groups and inside jokes?

I just moved to the area and joined this forum, but I'm honestly not sure how to jump in. Everyone seems to already have their own groups and inside jokes, and I'm worried my first post in another section came off a bit awkward. How did you all find your footing when you were the new person?

I moved here a couple years back and felt the same. I started by answering small posts and tagging people who looked like they did the same stuff I did. After a week I found a couple folks who were up for a coffee or a quick chat online, and that made the whole thing feel less random.

I posted something that felt clumsy and worried about it for hours. A simple reply from someone a few posts in reminded me people here aren’t grading first impressions, and I loosened up a little.

I poked around a few threads about a hobby I actually have and dropped a short comment. Then I asked a plain question about a local meetup. It wasn’t fireworks, but it did spark a couple messages back and forth.

Maybe the real problem isn't you at all, but the vibe here. Is the real problem the forum's vibe, or is it just that you need the right thread to jump into?
