How do i fix a smart thermostat wiring conflict with a heat pump?
#1
I just installed a smart thermostat and I’m worried I might have messed up the programming for our heat pump. The schedule seems to be fighting with the auxiliary heat strips, making the system run constantly. I’m not sure if this is a setup issue or if the thermostat just isn’t compatible with my specific HVAC configuration.

That sounds familiar. Last winter I watched the thermostat seem to outrun the weather and keep the system running as if it was colder than it actually was. I checked the mode and schedule and tried turning off any smart recovery to keep it simple. It helped a little, but the house still felt like the heat was staying on longer than it should.

I ran into this too and it really seemed like the auxiliary heat strips were taking over once the temps fell. I set the thermostat to auto and tweaked the schedule, but it still ran longer than I expected. It felt more like a control quirk than a simple wiring issue, and I didn’t want to dive into the inside of the furnace.

Is the outdoor temperature actually dipping below the balance point? I wonder if the thermostat is just doing what it’s told when it reads cold?

One more thought that drifts a bit: I started logging runtime and noticed the basement thermostat was doing something different, like it was pulling a separate schedule. It felt fuzzy and I never finished chasing it down, so I stopped and just watched it for a few days.
