How do I fix pumping sidechain on synth pads without losing space in the mix?

I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit better in the mix, and I keep reading that sidechain compression is the key to creating space. I set up a compressor on the pad track triggered by the kick, but now the pads just sound like they’re pumping unnaturally and disappearing too much. I’m not sure if my attack is too fast or if I’m using too much ratio.

I tried sidechain compression on a pad once, you know the thing people swear will give you space. It pumped like a heartbeat, and with a fast attack and a high ratio it ducked the pad so aggressively it vanished between kicks. I tried lowering the attack a bit and it still sounded odd, so I gave up and left the pad quieter.

What helped for me was backing off the attack and using a gentle knee, plus a longer release so the pad breathes instead of snapping back. I kept the threshold relative to the kick so it ducks less hard, and the pad stayed present but less loud.

Maybe the real problem isn't the compressor at all. If the kick is eating the space, carving out a notch in the kick or sidechaining the bass to the kick might be needed. I once solved it by carving the kick's sub a bit so the pad could exist without fighting.

I tried just automating the pad level during the kick instead of cheating with a compressor. It gave a nicer crest in the beat, but in a chorus section it sounded inconsistent and I skipped it. Not sure if automation is the right path for a live feel.
