How do I get a clean, loose starting sketch in digital painting?
#1
I’ve been trying to get more consistent with my digital painting lately, but I keep getting stuck on how to handle the initial sketch phase. My lines feel messy and it takes forever to find a good foundation for the painting, which kills my momentum. I’m wondering if anyone has a method for creating a cleaner starting point that still feels loose and creative.

I hear you. I switched to a two layer dance: first a super loose gesture and rough shapes on a separate layer with a big soft brush, like a quick wind-up. Then I lower the opacity of that block and draw a clean line layer just for the main contours. It keeps the momentum because I can erase the rough stuff without wrecking the canvas, and the final lines feel more intentional rather than perfect from the start.

I used to chase clean lines right away, and I hated how stiff everything looked. What helped was making tiny thumbnails first, 4 or 6 quick options, then picking the strongest line of action and building from there. The key was resisting the urge to tighten the whole thing in one pass; I let the pose breathe and then did a lighter clean-up pass on top.

Do you think the problem is actually the line quality, or is it the fear of wasting time on a rough start and sabotaging momentum? I sometimes skip the block-in and go straight to a committed final shape, and it backfires because I lose flexibility.

I’ll admit I sometimes doodle on a scrap page or phone during a commute. When I come back, those loose shapes remind me you don’t need perfect lines to tell a story. I try to keep one loose gesture on a layer to guide color and rhythm, and if the sketch still feels off, I just push the color first and sketch later.
