How do i get more people to show up to a casual board game night?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for my apartment building, but I’m stuck on how to actually get people to show up. I put a sign-up sheet in the lobby and only got two names over a week, which feels pretty discouraging. Maybe a flyer with a clear date and time would work better, or is there something else that helps build that initial momentum for these small local gatherings?

I tried posters in the lobby, but turnout stayed flat. Then I made a simple flyer with the date and time, plus a line about snacks, and handed a copy to neighbors I saw. After a week I started getting actual names on the sheet.

I set a recurring Sunday evening and kept the same time every week. I asked folks to bring a quick snack or a favorite light game. It took a couple weeks, but people started planning around it.

Maybe the sheet isn’t the bottleneck. I chatted with a few people in the hallway and was met with polite yeses that never showed up. It felt like the real issue might be the vibe or the timing, not the sign-up itself.

I did tiny nudges like a small snack table and rotating hosts for the first hour. Not magical, but it lowered the barrier a bit. Do you think the problem is the day or the activity?
