How do I get natural drape in Blender cloth simulation without stiffness?
#1
I’m trying to get better at creating realistic fabric folds for a character’s clothing in Blender, but my simulations always seem to either look too stiff or collapse into a messy lump. I’ve been tweaking the cloth modifier settings for what feels like forever, but I can’t seem to find that sweet spot where the drape feels natural and has the right weight to it.

I hear you. I found the big wins come from balancing cloth mass and bending. If the fabric is too light it flops, too heavy it stays stiff. I played with mass around 0.9 to 1.2 and bending in the 0.2–0.4 range, turned on self collision, and that helped the drape feel like it has weight.

Another time I chased tiny tweaks and kept bouncing between quality steps and pinning, and it drove me nuts. I baked with higher quality steps and a denser collision, and the result looked smoother in the sim, but then fell apart when I moved the garment or changed scale.

Do you have a reference shot of the fabric?

Sometimes I pause and spin the view to watch how light and shadow fall along the folds. It helps me separate shading tricks from real physics, and I still end up tweaking after a bake.
